There are single family homes - sometimes from the low $100,000s - and condos and occasionally town homes that have been built to be green.
I usually use the "green" term to mean homes that are third-party certified. There are some homes with many green features that may have been built before the certifications, too.
I won't try to talk you into buying anything you don't want. Really. I would never do that. But I do want you to be sure you know your options and green is one of them. More and more of the Asheville area builders are becoming certified to build green homes.
Besides being more energy efficient, healthier, and more comfortable in general, they are also often more durable. You may be less likely to have to fix something in a few years. So, that's a savings down the road, as well as the energy savings.
The homes can cost a bit more up front, though - as much as ten percent, but they also hold their value better and are easier to sell. Even in this economy (2011), green homes are selling well and for more.
So, if you can afford to spend a little more now, it's worth it in the long run.
